Spending

Our mantra: Do not over-borrow and you will not over-spend.

Avoid purchasing anything you did not go in to the store for. Avoid impulse and cash register buys.

Use a debit card or cash when possible when paying for holiday gifts.

If you have a fixed source of income (grocery money from parents), consider buying groceries with a credit card and pay off the total cost of groceries each month to the credit card company. This can help establish consistency.

Don’t spend money on a bet. That is called betting, not spending. If you go to Vegas leave your credit cards in the safe of your room. Remember the combo :)

Another spending tip: if you have alternative or student loan funds, make sure tuition is covered before cashing any check, as that check might be for you to sign over to the controller’s office.
